P.A.T.C. H.& S’ Update
December 2007
A survey was sent out at the beginning of the year to assess what activities our families would like see offered through PSD this year. We’ve added a Family Bowling party and a Family potluck/Math Bingo activity for this school year because these were two of the most popular events on the survey. Parents were informed of the additions in our Dec. Family Exchange.
Carl Harmon, our Co Chairman and PSD dad wants to get Dads more involved at PSD. He attended to a workshop in the Poconos about Father Involvement and he wants to get a dad’s group started here. He, Doug Johnson and a few other interested dads will get together to plan some activities for fathers including Bring Your Fathers to School Day and maybe a Father and child sleepover event in the Spring. Any dads who would like to get more involved should contact Brenda Wilford to get Carl’s phone number.
At our most recent staff in-service day, Family Involvement was one of the main items discussed by the staff. There was a lot of discussion about encouraging parents to plan and run some of the activities at PSD.
We had a very good Grandparent activity. Lots of grandparents came and shared family pictures with their grandchildren and made a family tree
A flyer was sent out to parents to determine their interested in receiving a recently revised Directory of Organizations and Agencies serving Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals in Philadelphia. Families should receive only one directory each, (unless special circumstances requiring another directory is indicated.) The flyer also included the URl so parents can download the materials themselves.
This year PSD is offering a free evening and a morning sign class for family members. We take a break in the winter but classes will begin again in late Feburary, 08.
There are plans to improve the appearance of the Family room in ECC.We will buy new furniture and add some plants. We plan to order equipment to make the room look like a typical deaf home (smoke alarm, flashing door bell, vibrating alarm clock, video phone, etc. Lauren ( one of our Art Teachers) is looking for some student art for the room. We will also add a projector, DVD/VCR player, and a flat screen to go with the video phone. Several parents are interested in helping decorate the room. We’d like to finish the room by sometime in January.
PSD is planning parent and student visits to post secondary placements (where students are likely to go after they leave PSD). More information to follow as these plans solidify.
There was much concern voiced about the PSD website. Parents and staff feel that it needs to be updated and improved.
