The Varsity Athletic Program at PSD has been established for the purpose of interscholastic competition. These competitions will center on good sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and integrity as advocated by the National Federation of State High School Athletics (NFSHSA), the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), and the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA). All students who intend to participate in the Varsity Athletic Program must meet standards established by these organizations and by PSD. The program is open to academically, behaviorally, and chronologically eligible secondary students - 7th through 12th grades.

Any secondary student in good academic standing may try-out for a Team. Selections will be made by the Coaches with the approval of the Principal and Athletic Director. These selections will be based on skill level, potential for growth in the sport, attitude, and ability to participate in practices and games. Athletes will remain eligible for Team participation if they demonstrate satisfactory academic performance in all classes.

Varsity Practice generally takes place Mondays through Thursdays and will start the first day of school for those students whose paperwork is complete and transportation is set-up.

Annual medical clearance by a physician is mandatory for participation and a Health History Update needs to be completed by a Parent/Guardian each new season after the physical. You may have also received this form from the Nurse's Office. The same physical may be used for Athletics that is needed by the Nurse's Office. Be aware that many Doctor's Offices use their own computerized form for data-keeping. This is acceptable to the Athletic Department BUT clearance to participate in competitive sports must be indicated. So, if your Doctor uses his own form, we still need the section on the back of our form that reads "Expanded Physical for Sports Participation." Students without a current physical or clearance cannot practice with a team until forms are complete.

This is Varsity competition and certain risks are involved. Despite all reasonable supervision, training, and protective equipment, injuries can occur so we must all work together to follow all medical policies. Proper attire, including footwear, is mandatory and the responsibility of the participant. Attendance at Monday through Thursday practices as well as game and weekend Tournament participation is required of all Team members. Transportation primarily is the responsibility of the Parent/Guardian but PSD is willing to assist as much as possible and runs drop-offs in the Philadelphia and Delaware County areas after most practices and games.

As noted, our Teams will be participating in some weekend Tournaments. These Tournaments take place at ESDAA member schools. PSD, along with 18 other schools for the Deaf, belongs to the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association. Intra-association play provides our Athletes with the opportunity to meet and compete with other Deaf Athletes, while the weekend Tournaments give them the opportunity to visit other Deaf schools, socialize, and begin to develop friendships with Deaf students outside our area. It is a vital aspect of our Athletic Program and Team members are obligated to participate in these events. Students should not join a Team if they know they cannot fulfill this requirement.

It is the goal of the Athletic Program at PSD to develop good athletes, great students, and exemplary citizens.
