PSD School News

Get your hands ready to give some HIGH FIVES!!!

Look at the smiles at the beginning of the race...                                            ....  and the smiles at the end!! :)

On September 21, 2008, we, the Panther Runners, met at PSD at 5:30am sleepy and still dreaming of our warms beds we boarded the bus to the Art Museum. This morning we will be running 13.1 miles and its seemed hard to imagine at such an early hour.

We arrived, pinned on our numbers, attached our chip through our sneakers and began to warm-up. Fellow Student Run folks joined our group and we became a mass of 100+ students getting ready to "show our stuff".
Who are we? STUDENTS ...our cheer....      What do we do? RUN      How do we run? PHILLY STYLE!!!

At the start of the gun we looked our best: nervous, excited and determined and continued to push ourselves all the way up to the last step across the finish line. For our experienced runners: Charles Dickens, Dominick Booker-Bates, Patrick Hegarty, Daimere Phillips, Hiram Ramos, Becky Ritter and Kate Strouse this was familiar. Times were improved, pain overcome and our bodies strong. Our rookie runners: Sacha Ramos, Zakee Bess, Gordon Hughes, and Liz Knapp this was a different look at Philadelphia as they wound through Center City and around the training loop (West River Drive to Kelly Drive).

All of the runners ran an amazing 13.1 mile race. Please take the time to congratulate all of them for a impressive performance. Ask about our shirts and our medals we wear with pride. We are proud of ourselves and hope you come and cheer us on when we run in the Philadelphia Marathon this November 23rd.

Panther Runners...alive and running strong!!
A big thanks to Dominick's mom, Gordon's father and David Longo (our bike man) for helping support our runners!

Dr. Larry Taub to Succeed Joseph Fischgrund in July 2008

First Deaf Individual in 185 Years to Head Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD)

The members of the Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD) are pleased to announce the unanimous selection of Dr. Larry S. Taub to succeed Joseph E. Fischgrund as PSD’s 15th Head of School beginning July 1, 2008.   Dr. Taub will be the first deaf individual to head the school in the modern era.  (The noted Deaf Frenchman, Laurent Clerc, served as Head Teacher at PSD from 1821-1822.)  Dr. Taub is currently Superintendent and CEO of the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf, in Falmouth, Maine.

Dr. Taub’s appointment follows an exhaustive ten-month national search to find a successor for Mr. Fischgrund, who has been PSD’s Headmaster for the past 20 years.  Dr. Jay J. Basch, President of PSD’s Board of Trustees and a PSD alumnus, said, “Since PSD has not had a school administrator who was deaf for nearly 190 years, we are very fortunate to have Dr. Taub join our team.  His vision for PSD in the 21st century has convinced our Search Committee and Board of Trustees to select him for this important position.”

Dr. Taub brings a wealth of educational, administrative, and personal experience to his new position.   Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Taub said, “It is a time of great challenges and expectations for the Deaf community; we have our work cut out for us to prepare the next generation of children to be as independent and economically emancipated as possible.  It certainly can be done!”

Deaf since birth, Dr. Taub is a member of a multi-generational Deaf family.  He attended Jr. High School 47 also known as the School for the Deaf in New York City and later attended William Cullen Bryant High School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Hofstra University; a Master of Arts in Education of the Deaf degree from NYU, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration degree from Columbia University.  He has worked for the last seven years at the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf in Maine, and previously worked for 25 years as Assistant Principal as well as a high school teacher at the New York School for the Deaf in White Plains.  He is a noted presenter on deaf and special education issues and a member of the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf.
