TIPS FOR COMMUNICATING WITH DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING PEOPLE

1. Get the person’s attention before you speak and look directly at the person at all times when speaking.

2. Be aware of false impressions (nodding doesn’t necessarily mean, "I understand").

3. Do not put obstacles in front of your face or in your mouth such as gum, cigarettes, or food.

4. Speak clearly and at a moderate pace. Don’t exaggerate your lip movements.

5. Use facial expressions and gestures.

6. Give clues when changing the subject.

7. Rephrase when you are not understood, (say it in another way or use other words).

8. Don’t shout.

9. Avoid noisy background situations, especially for people who use hearing aids.

10. Be patient, positive, and relaxed.

11. When in doubt, ask the deaf or hard of hearing person for suggestions to improve communication.

12. If you don’t understand, ask for clarification.

13. Use paper and pencil if necessary.
